What is the working principle of an LNG Cryogenic Pump Skid?

Hey there! I’m working for an LNG cryogenic pump skid supplier, and today I wanna share with you the working principle of an LNG cryogenic pump skid. It’s a pretty cool piece of equipment, especially if you’re in the natural gas industry or just curious about how these things work. LNG Cryogenic Pump Skid

First off, let’s talk a bit about LNG, which stands for liquefied natural gas. Natural gas is mainly made up of methane. When it’s cooled down to around -162 degrees Celsius (-260 degrees Fahrenheit), it turns into a liquid. This liquid form takes up way less space than its gaseous state, which makes it super easy to store and transport. That’s where the LNG cryogenic pump skid comes in.

So, what exactly is a cryogenic pump skid? Well, it’s a self – contained unit that includes a cryogenic pump, piping, valves, and control systems all mounted on a skid. This skid is designed to be easily installed and integrated into an LNG handling system.

The heart of the LNG cryogenic pump skid is, of course, the cryogenic pump. These pumps are specially designed to work in extremely cold temperatures. They need to be able to handle LNG without any issues, and that means they’re made from materials that can withstand the cold and the high pressures involved.

Let’s get into the working principle step by step.

1. Inlet and Pre – Cooling

The process starts at the inlet of the cryogenic pump skid. LNG from a storage tank flows into the skid through the inlet piping. Before the pump can start working effectively, it needs to be pre – cooled. This is because the pump is usually at a much higher temperature than the LNG when it’s first started up.

Pre – cooling is done by allowing a small amount of LNG to circulate through the pump and the associated piping. This slowly brings the temperature of the pump down to the level of the LNG. If the pump isn’t pre – cooled properly, it can cause mechanical stress and damage to the pump components due to the rapid temperature change.

2. Suction

Once the pump is pre – cooled, the suction process begins. The LNG is drawn into the pump through the suction port. The cryogenic pump uses a set of impellers, which are like spinning blades. As the impellers rotate at high speed, they create a low – pressure area at the suction port.

This low – pressure area causes the LNG to be sucked into the pump. The design of the impellers is crucial here. They need to be able to handle the cold, viscous LNG and transfer it efficiently from the suction side to the discharge side of the pump.

3. Compression

After the LNG is sucked into the pump, it enters the compression stage. The impellers continue to rotate, and they push the LNG towards the center of the pump and then outwards. This movement increases the pressure of the LNG.

Cryogenic pumps are usually multi – stage pumps, which means they have multiple sets of impellers. Each stage further increases the pressure of the LNG. The overall increase in pressure allows the LNG to be transported through the piping system to its destination, such as a tanker truck for transportation or a processing facility for further treatment.

4. Discharge

Once the LNG has been compressed to the desired pressure, it exits the pump through the discharge port. The high – pressure LNG then flows through the discharge piping in the skid.

Valves in the discharge line are used to control the flow and pressure of the LNG. These valves can open or close depending on the requirements of the system. For example, if the pressure in the downstream system is too high, the valve can throttle the flow to maintain a stable pressure.

5. Control and Monitoring

A big part of the working of an LNG cryogenic pump skid is the control and monitoring system. This system keeps an eye on all the important parameters like temperature, pressure, and flow rate.

Temperature sensors are placed at various points in the skid, especially around the pump. They make sure that the temperature stays within the safe operating range. If the temperature goes too high, it could indicate a problem with the pump or the cooling system, and the control system can take action, like shutting down the pump.

Pressure sensors are also used. They monitor the pressure at the inlet and outlet of the pump and in the piping system. If the pressure is too high or too low, the control system can adjust the speed of the pump or the position of the valves to correct it.

Flow rate sensors help in measuring how much LNG is being pumped. This information is important for ensuring that the right amount of LNG is being supplied to the downstream system.

6. Safety Features

Safety is a top priority when it comes to LNG cryogenic pump skids. There are several safety features built into the system.

One of the most important safety features is the over – pressure protection. Relief valves are installed in the piping system. If the pressure in the system exceeds a certain limit, the relief valve will open and release some of the LNG to prevent damage to the equipment.

There are also emergency shutdown systems. In case of a serious problem, like a fire or a major leak, these systems can quickly stop the operation of the pump and close all the relevant valves to prevent further damage or danger.

Another safety feature is the insulation. The cryogenic pump skid is well – insulated to prevent heat transfer from the surrounding environment to the LNG. This helps to keep the LNG at its low temperature and also reduces the risk of vaporization, which could lead to over – pressure situations.

Now that you know how an LNG cryogenic pump skid works, you can see why it’s such an important piece of equipment in the LNG industry. Whether it’s for storage, transportation, or processing, these skids play a crucial role in getting LNG from one place to another safely and efficiently.
